LO4: Evaluation

As part of this unit i have been tasked with creating a new magazine for SPH publishing house to cater for a large Sheffield. As a result i have planned, developed and produced a sports based magazine, more specifically of the extreme sports genre.

As part of this I have been asked to three pages, both a front cover and contents page as well as a double page spread to appeal to a Sheffield based audience.

Front Cover – For the cover page I have used a bold sans serif font in addition to a graphic which emphasises the "s" as this style clearly portrays the nature of the sport and therefore the magazine whilst also having clear connotations of action and excitement which I plan to emulate throughout. The main masthead will read ‘Seven Peaks MTB’ as this name relates to the regional aspect of the magazine whilst also directly referring to the sport and therefore the context of the magazine, this style of masthead is also concentric to this genre. The sans serif font will also the audience to easily read and interoperate the text. Sell lines I have used are ; “Next Years Kit”, “Trail Tested” , "Ride Here, Ride Now"and “Rock Stars” most importantly this sell line would is affective as the pun creates interest and also directly refers to the content of the article.  As a whole I have used bold and vibrant block colours in the house style as these have a greater impact as they significantly contrast the background and stand out clearly against most imagery. Examples of colours I have used are yellows and oranges. Most noticeably oranges would are used as it connotes and is perceived to be creative, energetic, expressive, dynamic and is also often seen in recruitment, entertainment, education and sport medias.
Similarly, I also used a candid/ action style image which dominantly features a mountain biker which again clearly shows the reader the nature of the magazine whilst also immediately engaging them. The picture should also shows the rider in a positive light to engage the audience and to allow the model to be perceived as the ideal self or partner. For this i have used a telephoto lens zoomed in to frame the reader with a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion resulting in a sharp focussed rider with the background being slightly out of focus resulting in an aesthetically pleasing shallow depth of field. The composition for this photo would also be key as it has to be visually appealing whilst also being functional as a front cover. For example, i have positioned the rider central to the page to draw the readers attention to it immediately and to allow for the text elements such as the sell lines and banners would be placed so that they do not interfere with the imagery.

However, within the front cover several aspects have changed from the original proposal and visualisation diagrams. For example the arrangement of the cover lives and colours have all been changed to fit with the new cover image used in the final piece. A different cover image was used as this new image represents an ideal self or partner better and would be seen to have a greater appeal. Unlike in the visualisation diagram i decided to remove certain elements such as the main banner at the top, as i felt the more minimalist look would have a greater appeal to the target audience.

Contents Page  The contents page of this magazine has been dominantly filled with imagery and references to pages as this is a common theme throughout the genre of this magazine additionally I feel that it is more  visually appealing. Examples of images I have included are action style images featured in the main articles and double page spreads, all of which have vibrant colours to add visual interest and add emphasis to the piece. In addition to this, there is a section clearly defined, which describes the contents and pages that will involve articles on; product reviews/showcase, rider stories, news and updates, maps/locations and prizes or giveaways.

Double page spreads - The main double page spread within the magazine features products being showcased and reviewed. Subsequently, this page heavily features close up photography of the products in question. For this I have used a portrait lens to achieve a shallow depth of field to emphasize the product on show. Similarly, the photos have also been taken in a natural setting to reiterate the ideas of the natural setting in which the sport is often undertaken in.  With regards to the body copy, this page is less text oriented with frequent use of facts and statistics such as pricing and shop links.

Throughout all the text and pages of the magazine I have kept a consistent house style and mode of address as this is seen in many current magazines. With regards to colour schemes and housetyle I have used the same bold, block colours used on the front cover of the magazine to keep in line with the idea of a consistent brand image. Furthermore, I have also used a limited amount of colours with the intention not to overcomplicate the page similarly on the main double page spread. Within the review section it features a more peer to peer tone of address due to advice being given directly to the reader and the feature of reviews from real personnel within the sport.

As a whole i feel that the finished product meets the brief of a magazine to appeal to a sheffield based audience. For example within the magazine i have included local star persona which would therefore appeal to the local audience. In addition to this in order to appeal to a younger audience i have implemented a large variety of images in all pages of the magazine to add visual interest in addition to using bold and prominent colours. Despite this it is still seen to appeal to an ABC1 as throughout the layout is set out to be organised and well defined allowing the body copy to be easily interpreted

LO4: Final Product

LO4: Exporting final magazine pages

Below is a an example of RAW (.CR2) files which all images were shot in:

A RAW format was chosen to shoot in as it is a high quality lossless format meaning it is of a high quality. The RAW format also allows for greater control when editing as it saves more image data allowing for a higher quality of editing unlike a JPEG as all the image data is compressed. To edit said photos they were imported into Adobe Lightroom where all the necessary changes were made and then exported as a JPEG as this is a format is more commonly accepted in most softwares unlike the Raw format which is a less common.

Below is a screenshot evidencing the export of the front cover as a .TIFF file format.
The front cover of the magazine was exported as a .TIFF as this file is a lossless file format meaning it is of a high quality which is beneficial to the final printing of the product. Subsequently, this file format is common in the industry and magazines of the likes of "Dirt" and "MBUK". Similarly when editing, the files were saved as PSD's (Photoshop Documents) as this is also a lossless file format that allows for graphics to be created and edited in layers. Not only is this a high quality file format the software is also industry standard meaning it is commonly used throughout the industry and by graphic designers alike.

Below is a screenshot of the dialogue box when exporting the contents page and dps from indesign as a PDF.
Both the contents page and double page spread were exported as a Adobe PDF. This file format was chosen as it was again a high quality, lossless format allowing for high quality printing. Additionally, the PDF file is beneficial to the printing of the magazine therefore this is also an industry standard for publication. Similarly, all versions were saved as InDesign documents which allow for editing of all components in a high quality in addition to the ability to edit and create vectors. This is beneficial as vectors are of an extremely high quality and is infinitely scaleable making it better suited for large format printing or high quality e publishing and the exportation as PDF allows for this.

The E-Publishing of this magazine would be achieved in several different ways/ formats. For example the PDF allows for the magazine to be distributed via an online website or alternatively other formats such as .app, .mobi or ePub which all allow for the product to be downloaded and viewed on devices such as eReaders and mobile/tablet devices. Furthermore, a mobile app could be used to distribute the magazine and PDF easily uploaded as it is a universal format. This is be beneficial as it would also allow for the brand to be established as it could include features allowing for interaction with the audience and cross promotion of the whilst also revenue being generated from digital advertising within the app via pop ups and banners.

LO4: Client and focus group feedback

Below is a screenshot evidencing the questionnaire being sent out to a sample...

Feedback

From the questionnaire it is seen that all of the sample agreed that the double page spread is of a high quality and is seen to be professional. This is further supported by the majority 5 star rating with in all areas including: use of colour, photography, layout ease of use, relevance to the genre. The highest scoring aspect of the DPS is photography used where as the lowest scoring would be the lay out and ease of use. There was also no further improvements noted by those surveyed. With regards to the contents page it is seen that 75% of those surveyed agreed that it looked professional again with a majority 5 star rating in all areas and again the lowest scoring being that of the layout and ease of use for the page. This is further justified by the comments which make mention to adjusting the appearance of the descriptions of the pages in order to make them bolder and stand out more, in addition to adjusting the layout in order to make the page look less "tall and busy".

This could be achieved by possibly removing certain aspects of the page such as the subscribe banner and moving the main masthead to the left in order to free up space and provide a cleaner more professional and organised look.

LO4: Evidence of editing

 Edit 1: 0035
           - Contents Page
 Before:
After:
Editing of the main image. The RAW image file was imported into photoshop where the highlights, contrast, and clarity were all adjusted to make a more vibrant attractive image. Gradual filters were also added to add further emphasis to the rider.
Development of masthead design.

Editing image. The rider was first masked using a combination of the magnetic lasso tool and pen tool. from there a radial blur applied to the wheels to portray a sense of movement in addition to the background behind the rider having a subtle motion blur applied to add emphasis to the rider and portray a sense of speed.

Product Images set 1 (For DPS) :

The alterations were then saved as a preset and applied to the other photos taken in this area.
Creating graphics:
Below is a screenshot of the frame to be used in the DPS, these was created in photoshop using the rectangular marquee tool in conjunction with a texture overlay and a drop shadow with the intention to create a realistic effect. This was then exported as a PNG and inserted into the InDesign document.

Front Cover

 Before
After

Within the main cover image there was a person which detracted and distracted the readers eye from the main subject therefore this was removed. This was achieved by using the clone stamp tool to sample the surrounding material and brush away the person in addition to the content aware fill tool being used in places.

Editing of cover lines:

Originally the cover lines featured the text alone with the title however this was hard to read against the background. Therefore boxes were added to provide a vibrant background making it easier to use. However, this was plain and therefore colour was added to make the banner stand out using the colour overlay tool to easily to this. To further develop this, a harsh drop shadow was added with a contrasting colour to further emphasise the banner and break up the piece.

LO4: Subediting

Attached is a screenshot of the body copy for the double page spread on product reviews/ showcase which has been peer assessed, the strengths and weaknesses are as follows:
The grammar is very good and it is written well. It is detailed and has good descriptions about the products.  Good use of words to describe the product and to make people want to buy.

Read through all your work
Add photos of the products along side the information.

As a result of this feedback i plan to revise the body copy and ensure it makes grammatical sense and is relevant to the product and audience.
